![]() ![]() Lazlo Bock recently expressed how Google altered their way of finding and hiring people in order to acquire qualified individuals.īock says: “Part of the challenge with leadership is that it’s very driven by gut instinct in most cases - and even worse, everyone thinks they’re really good at it. When Google emphasizes a component like emergent leadership, it becomes noteworthy. And just as critically, do you step back and stop leading, do you let someone else? Because what’s critical to be an effective leader in this environment is you have to be willing to relinquish power.” (Friedman, 2014)Ĭorporations take notice of how successful companies get there. Bock is adamant that leadership (particularly emergent leadership) is a key element they are seeking in individuals, second only to cognitive ability.īock explains: “What we care about is, when faced with a problem and you’re a member of a team, do you, at the appropriate time, step in and lead. In a recent New York Times interview with Laszlo Bock, the senior vice president of people operations, the conversation centers on hiring practices. The global technology giant, Google, realizes the implications of emergent leadership. In contrast, leaders whose characteristics deviate from the norms of their group are often perceived as ineffective, even if they demonstrate some excellent qualities.” (Moss, 2011) “According to the social identity theory of leadership, leaders who are prototypical are typically perceived as very effective and even charismatic. (Moss, 2011) The value of identifying and endorsing the prototypical individual becomes essential in emergent leadership. This relates to the attitudes, beliefs, goals, and behaviors that typify the organization and what it stands for. (Northouse, 2013)īut more importantly in the context of organizational success, the emergent leader exhibits the norms of the organization. This acceptance is communicated among the group dynamic. Group members perceive and accept the leader’s direction as desirable and appropriate. The leader acquires the role by others supporting his or her behavior and influence. By emphasizing emergent leadership, organizations can create a suitable atmosphere for growth and longevity.Įmergent leadership occurs when others perceive someone as most influential among the group. In order to support this initiative and foster an environment of leadership development, organizations should focus on those individuals who emerge among the group context. Organizations continue to seek ways to meet their goals and build upon their success. ![]()
