For copyright reasons, Apple has made it impossible to make screengrabs while the playback software is running. For example, Apple has configured it so that it is not possible to make a screenshot of a movie that is being played via the DVD player software. This usually has something to do with the program that you are attempting to display. It can sometimes be the case that making a screen capture on a Mac doesn’t work. (It is also possible to install a button in the Touch Bar specifically for the creation of MacBook screenshots.) The shortcut key for this form of screen grab – as the Touch Bar is located underneath the actual monitor – is + +. A requirement for this is that you have the update macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or later. It is also possible to make a screenshot of this display. Touch Bar: As of 2016, MacBook Pros are fitted out with an additional navigation bar – an OLED touch screen known as the Touch Bar.Like with the other processes, you can cancel this process by pressing the Esc button. Now when you click into a menu, the title will also be a part of the screenshot. This can only be done if, prior to clicking your mouse, you transform the pointer into a crosshair cursor by pressing the spacebar. However, this will not save the title of the menu. Using the cursor, click on the menu and create your screenshot. To do this simply open the menu and press + +. Menu: Even a menu can be saved separately as a screenshot on a Mac.This process can also be cancelled at any time by pressing the Esc button. Simply click on the window that you wish to make a screenshot of. Now by pressing the space bar the cursor will become a camera symbol. Once again, your mouse will transform into a crosshair cursor. Window: If it is the case that you wish to save an entire window (and nothing else) as a screenshot, then you should also be pressing the button combination of + +.If you wish to cancel the screengrab during the process, simply press the Esc button. The screenshot will then be performed at this moment. Move the cursor to where you would like to begin the screen grab, then click and pull to the desired size before releasing the mouse again. In this case, the mouse pointer will turn into a crosshair cursor. Rectangular area: Press + + to grab a rectangular section of a screen.Entire screen: You can make a screenshot of the entire display by pressing + +.There are different buttons depending on which area of a macOS or OS X you wish to make a screen grab of: Apple users will always need to press a combination of buttons (a shortcut) to make a screenshot on a Mac. It is this button that allows Windows users, with one single press of a button, to make a screen grab of everything on display on a monitor. Extra Stuff - Capturing Long Web Pages Sometimes you want to capture a web page, but only a little bit is on the screen at once.Apple devices don’t have a ‘Print Screen’ button. To export images from it, just hit Command+E. Even better than OS X My favorite non-native app is Skitch. It is very powerful for basic screen capturing as well as adding some quick notes, rectangles, and arrows. The functions are pretty much the same except for a timer option that grabs the whole screen after 10 seconds. Here are those modifiers: Space bar - move whole selection Shift - resize one side of your selection Option - resize rectangle around the center point Another option is to use the Grab application that comes with OS X in the Utilities folder. So saving the desktop to the clipboard is Control+Shift+3, saving an area is Control+Shift+4 and saving a window is Control+Shift+4 then space bar If you're using Leopard or later, you can modify the capture area you're highlighting with Command+Shift+4 or Control +Shift+4. If you want to save that image to the clipboard instead, use Control instead of Command. Hover your mouse over a window and click to save an image of that window. Command+Shift+4 then hit space bar (capture window) This highlights a window. This is by far my favorite of all of these tools. Click and drag to create a rectangle that you want to save. Command+Shift+4 (capture selected area) This creates crosshairs on the screen. If you use two screens it will save one image for each screen. Command+Shift+3 (capture whole screen) this captures an image of the whole screen and saves it to your desktop. So how to do it? Use keyboard commands! When buttons are connected by a + sign that means that you push all of those buttons at the same time. This makes it a lot easier to share ideas with others. It's super useful to get an image of a website or an image or even just a part of an image. Capturing a screenshot on OS X is something that I use on an incredibly regular basis.
